"HONK" at the Center Theater November 9 & 10
Thornwell Elementary School for the Arts has done it again... bringing wonderful entertainment to the Hartsville Center Theater as only children can perform it.
Directed by the infamous Adam Weiner with music direction by the equally infamous Kim Roberts, Honk! brought the house down. The music was wonderful, and the acting fantastic.
With a large cast in adorable barnyard costumes made by Daeshia Arthur & Barrett Jackson, and a great set designed and constructed by Eleanor Clark & Adam Weiner, with technical assistance by Chance O'Neal, the show was also a feast for the eyes.
The crowd sat in anticipation to see their child, grandchild, sister, brother, cousin or friend perform, but no audience member was more excited than this little lady:
She not only wore her own ducky costume to the show, she tapped her foot to each song and clapped along to every cast member that cheeped, honked, or meowed.
The familiar tale of the strange baby bird in the nest was given a modern twist in this tale of an "ugly" baby that honks instead of quacks.
Here, Daddy Drake and Mama Ida stand with their brood...four little chicks and a strange big baby that honks.
From the turtle to the turkeys, no one knows what to make of the baby that honks and looks so... different.
The Bullfrog and his Frog Chorus know that everyone is wonderful, "Warts and All"...
After the mean kitty cat tries to eat Ugly, she gets lost and is found by a group of beautiful swans...
She didn't want to follow them, preferring to continue to find her way home to her Mama, because as all adopted children know, the family that raised you... or hatched as the case may be... is the family that you love.
Along came a Geese Patrol to save the day, and fly the wayward Ugly and the kitty still trying to eat her back closer to home.
The little cat and Ugly got caught in an awful snowstorm, with "snow" falling on the stage of the Center Theater in lovely fat snowflakes that made the entire audience "ooh" and "ahh"... until the love of the Mama duck warmed her baby and allowed her to thaw and return home, bringing her true twin, Penny the swan, with her.
Audience members got a treat, for Ugly and Penny are TRUE TWINS, Marilyn and Madeline Smith, and both lovely singers to boot!
For all that came to see the play, either during their matinées or their Friday evening performance, you certainly got a treat.
For those of you that didn't? Start reading that Marquee at the Center Theater! For by supporting the arts in Hartsville, particularly the arts as presented by the children of youth of our town, you are enriching your life and insuring that the arts will continue to flourish in our city.
Honking good time
This was such a wonderful performance by all of these children. What a great job the staff at Thornwell School for the Arts is doing in our community. This school has certainly is setting standards for our children to be proud of.
I also saw the lovely Ms. Longfellow in the audience taking these pictures. You do such lovely work.
