Pens and Paper, Keyboards and Screens
My handwriting grows poorer as my ability to text message on my cell phone improves….
I have more photos stored onto my hard drive than I have printed in the last few years, and the quality of the ones I can view on my computer is far greater than the ones in the shoe boxes from years gone by….
I can research a subject in one tenth the time without waiting for a library to open….
YouTube provides instant gratification for favorite songs from my youth, all with a few clicks and the speakers turned up high...
Handwritten love letters are rare these days, yet some e-mails are so achingly beautiful it seems a shame they are rarely saved…..
We can talk to each other daily no matter how many thousands of miles apart we may be, and not lay eyes on one another for years….
Through MySpace and AIM I know what my nieces and nephew are doing daily without ever calling them….
And it is rare that a day goes by without being “on-line”.
And yet, I miss being excited for the mailman to arrive…..
I long for handwritten letters with ink smudges….
Waiting for photos to come back to see if you “got” the right moment….
And telephone calls without hearing, “wait a minute, I have a beep-“.
Card catalogs, watching television with only four channels, scratchy records, and listening to a song over and over again to write the lyrics down.
Back when no one heard of “multi-tasking.”
It seems that the more conveniences we have, the less time we have to enjoy life.
Just for today,
let’s
slow
down.
Oh Jana, Jana...... usually
Oh Jana, Jana...... usually I agree with much of what you say... however, the comment about not having to wait for the library to open just grinds against my librarian heart. Have you ever tried snuggling up in bed with your computer monitor to sniffle your way through a beautiful romance novel???
Now, I have to laugh.... just yesterday my "house phone" rang and everybody hollers "not me" meaning "I don't want to stop what I'm doing and get up to answer the phone hanging on the wall." After I hung up from answering the call, I told my girls about how in MY days of youth everybody would holler "I got it!" meaning it's my turn to discover who is on the other end of that mystery call and just maybe the call will be for me! Sometimes progress makes us lose some of the old fashioned ways.
but of course!
In my little diatribe, I needed to add how nothing compares to reading a REAL book... I just meant that research sure is a lot easier these days, especially for night owls like me!
I'm the kinda girl that used to skip school in high school and end up in the library... nerdy, yes, but happy... ahhh! I love libraries! That was my favorite room at the Biltmore, favorite scene in Beauty and the Beast... yup, you got me there.
Long live libraries and the librarians that lovingly care for them!
