Miss Hartsville High School 2007
The Center Theater had Elvis in the house tonight as 26 lovely young ladies competed for the title of Miss Hartsville High School 2007. ((Be sure to check out The Hartsville Messenger this week for more photos, as staff members Ardie Ardvidson and Eddie Newman were on the front row taking photos with their professional skills. The photos on this post are the work of an amateur...just like you could be! Also joined on the front row, camera in hand, was the ever popular and equally amazing photographer Scott Huffer of Sonoco, otherwise known as "Bree/Ben/Brett/Brooke's Dad"!))
Elvis impersonator, Mr. Ron Shackelford, sang for the full house of HHS faculty, students, and family members and friends of the contestants.
Nicole Boone of Florence Channel 13 was a delightful host, wore her "red and black" in honor of the Red Fox audience, handled a number of delays in the program with her good humor and ability to ad-lib.
After one admonishment by HHS Principal Dr. Burry for the students in the balcony to quiet their roar, the audience was respectful and clapped for each and every young girl as they made that nervous walk to center stage to smile and turn for the audience wearing their casual wear, which ranged from very casual to very dressy.
The young ladies changed into their evening wear while the handsome young Weldon Mumford sang “My Way”, accompanied by Lin Kirkman on the piano. Weldon, as most of Hartsville will agree, has an incredible voice and would surely do well on the popular American Idol television show!
As the young ladies completed their final touches on their evening gowns, Miss Hartsville 2006, Irby Haynes, was interviewed by Ms. Nicole Boone; the former Miss Hartsville is quite a comedianne, and gave a “shout out” to her boyfriend in the audience and told the crowd that high school was a lot more fun than college… but she says "I'm tryin’"!
The contestants wore their lovely evening gowns, and did a fabulous job with their walks, turns and smiles. The dresses ranged in styles and colors, and all the girls looked beautiful.
After a ten minute intermission, the crowd got a treat from some faculty members, who did a very unique “dance” to the Elvis hit song, “Blue Suede Shoes”…. they danced beneath a large “screen” so that only their lower legs and blue shod feet were visible- we knew that the faculty sponsor, Lynn Covington, was one of those dancers! She was thanked by the Junior Class representatives for all the hard work she did on the event, and presented with some lovely flowers of her own from Mitchell's Florist and a gift.
The Most Photogenic Award went to: Cameren Kinsley
The Outstanding Service Project award went to: Britanny Malloy
Miss Congeniality Award went to: Jasmine Johnson.
The girls stood hand and hand as the top ten finalists were called out:
The top ten finalists were:
Left to right: Jordan Pupa, Sara Howle, Emily Hungerpillar, Hannah Stanley, Borley Quaye, Brittany Malloy, Courtney Melton, Anita Samuel, Cameren Kinsley, Maggie Baldwin.
Each girl was asked to come to the center stage and tell the audience about their service projects:
Maggie Baldwin shared how she spent many hours tutoring with some underprivileged children in conjunction with her church, West Hartsville Baptist. Courtney Melton and Cameren Kinsley shared how they spent time with the animals at the Darlington County Humane Society, a place in great need of volunteers.
Borley Quaye’s service project involved building “birthday boxes” that included a cake, napkins and decorations for children through DHEC that have never had their own celebration.
Brittany Malloy, the winner of the service project, adopted over 30 men and women representing the Darlington County National Guard, and prepared care packages with writing materials and stamps, and met each and every one of them before they deployed to Iraq on February 8th.
Anita Samuel adopted four elderly women for a “girls night out”, and treated the crowd to an amusing description of not only how much in common she found she had with these elderly ladies, but just how active they all were- to the surprise of the high school senior!
Jordan Pupa’s project was constructing handmade rag dolls for children in impoverished countries suffering from neglect, HIV/AIDS, and other atrocities that need a toy to love and hold.
Hannah Stanley’s service project involved many hours teaching little girls how to be cheerleaders to build self esteem and a healthy lifestyle through the Upward Basketball program at her church, Lakeview Baptist.
Emily Hungerpillar’s project involved going to each of the YMCA afterschool programs and teaching the children the importance of exercise, eating well, and getting enough sleep to combat childhood obesity.
Sara Howle provided blankets with a poem and paper hands placed in a hug for abused children at the Durante Center, to comfort them and give them hope.
Brittany Caldwell did a fantastic tap dance to the Elvis song, “Fever”, and really wowed the crowd with her awesome talent.
Mr. Ron Shakelford sang a final tune to the crowd, while some of the younger girls in the competition were caught “peeking from the wings”, a perennial sight from the red velvet curtains of the Center Theater.
4th runner up: Borley Quaye
3rd runner up: Sara Howle
2nd runner up: Hannah Stanley
1st runner up: Anita Samuel
