Oh my goodness, what a lot of children in the Pumpkin Patch today!

Twenty nine 4-year olds from Central Baptist Church Kindergarten in Darlington drove to Hartsville for their very first visit to the Wesley Pumpkin Patch!

Their four teachers, Penny Weatherford, Samantha Gainey, Barbara Stanley, and Kim Hasselbring along with their adorable students (with their grandparents and parents along!) had a marvelous time this hot October morn'!

Susan Harvey describes the wonderful things you find at harvest time, such as cotton, corn, hay, and of course... pumpkins!

These little ones tried to count how many pumpkins they saw!

Judy Jacobs told the children all about the pumpkins, and how God made the pumpkins in many different sizes, shapes, and colors...just like them.

"walking thru the pumpkin patch, the pumpkin patch, we're walking thru the pumpkin patch..." next stop, the scarecrow to learn about how that little seed grows from Susan Harvey, a Master Gardener and on the Board of Kalmia Gardens (she and her husband Walt have been the Pumpkin Patch coordinators for a few years now...and she makes the lovely decorative pumpkins on the table!)

Susan shows the children how the pumpkin seed opens, grows some leaves, a vine, a yellow flower, a little green pumpkin...

Criss Cross Applesauce, it's time for singing and stories!

Linda Yount, former Director of First Presbyterian Kindergarten, leads the children in the wonderful "pumpkin-y" songs that my children grew up learning from her!

Susan Harvey does a neat paper cutting activity with the children...

The children and their families enjoy the stories.

Judy Jacobs reads a great story to the children who were on the edge of the pumpkin quilts, hearing about an old woman who saw shoes, overalls, a shirt, and a pumpkin head...

Susan shows the children about what the old woman saw... a scarecrow to scare the birds away from the garden!

The lovely children of Central Baptist Church in Darlington!

After a nice snack of juice and cookie, the children "adopt" a little pumpkin of their own to take him, with an adoption certificate, coloring page, and a sticker to show that they have been to the Pumpkin Patch. I overheard a few parents and grandparents talking about how much they enjoyed their trip to Hartsville...it's nice to have our neighbors over for such a fun morning.

The teachers told me that the school used to go to another pumpkin patch, but when they learned that this one gives the proceeds to local missions, they decided to come to this one.

Isn't it wonderful how the "fruits of the vine" end up helping those in need?

Stay tuned to HVTD for some more school groups from the area!

Perfect Post

Jana, you have a way with words and pictures. This is the kind of stuff we can't find in the newspaper. Thanks for making this season, and the story of the Wesley Pumpkin Patch, come to life!

Wesley Pumpkin Patch

Wow! I had no idea that the children and their families did so MUCH on their visit to the Wesley Pumpkin Patch. Makes me wish I was five again! A picture really IS worth a thousand words. Thanks for sharing.

Love this!!!

I really hope they take my little boys class to this. He loves pumpkins and story time. I plan on taking him to pick out a pumpkin and take some pictures but they don't get story time when we go.

Whoops!

I should have added to the post that the groups that come weekdays 9 - 12 are scheduled school groups from the area, from church and public school kindergartens.

If you have a group that would like to come, perhaps a group of parents and children together, that may be arranged...or perhaps "tag along" with a smaller scheduled school group.

Call the church office at 332-1196 and we'll put you in touch with the appropriate people to schedule a pumpkin patch outing.

It is a WONDERFUL place to come take fall photos of your children and grandchildren, come anytime!
