Take Your Parents to Chemistry Lab Day at Mayo Submitted by on Wed, 03/07/2007 - 23:28. Education Mrs. Ruth F. Taylor invited the family members of her 4th Block Chemistry class at Mayo High School for Math, Science & Technology to join the class today- and out of 10 teens, 7 brave adults joined them! The students had to write a chemistry lab for us to do, comparing antacids- generic vs. name brand. We donned our protective rubber aprons and neon colored goggles, and went to work. Mrs. Taylor’s room is state of the art, as is the rest of the Mayo HS campus. The shelves were full of beakers, ph strips, chemicals and more- you'd think you were in a college classroom in a large university! The roles were reversed, as the teens were heard instructing parents, “Don’t make such a mess!” and, “Wait, hold on, you didn’t measure that right, try again.” And, “Mom, keep stirring, the experiment is not done yet!” We had to crush the tablets with a mortar and pestle- I felt like a medicine woman!- and put the powder into a beaker with measured amounts of distilled water with hydrochloric acid and stir. Principal Arlene Johnson came by to say hello, and as always, knew every student and parent by name. She reminds me of Dr. Jim Daniels, past president of Coker College- another person who never forgot a name. After we finished our lab, the parents, grandparents and students shared a feast of food brought in from home…yes, we ate in the chemistry lab, and no, nobody made too much of a mess or was harmed from the acid. And, for the record… Tums beat the generic brand- I saw it for myself! Thank you, Mrs. Taylor and the students of 4th Block for a great experience! » login or register to post comments | previous forum topic | next forum topic | printer friendly version | 19 reads |
